Man City vs Borussia Dortmund Match preview
Cracking game in prospect as Dortmund find themselves in the quarter finals for the first time since 2017 and City yet again try to win the trophy they have been desperate to win since Pep Guardiola took over. It is worth remembering that this is where City have usually struggled in recent seasons. They have blitzed through their group and found themselves favourites to win the competition only to fall at the Quarter Final stage in each of the last 3 seasons. City’s defensive record this season a s a whole has been impressive but they haven’t conceded a single goal in the Champions League since their opening game against Porto.
Dortmunds hopes are going to rest on the shoulders of Ealing Haaland who has been heavily linked with a move to Man City. Haaland scored twice in both of their last 16 games against Sevilla and is the competitions leading scored with 10 goals (having also missed 2 matches due to injury). I think we should be in for an open attacking game, with 2 sides who average over 2 goals per game in the competition this season. Also Odrtmund will surely know they are going to have to attack and likely outscore Man City rather than try to keep them quiet at the other end and win this by a single goal or 2. Both teams to score looks a good bet as although City have been extremely solid defensively they haven’t faced a finisher who’s in the form of Haaland all season and its very likely that if he gets even 1 half decent chance he will find the back of the net. Over 2.5 goals also looks a good bet as City will want to take a lead into the reverse fixture and Dortmund will be desperate to pinch an away goal or 2 which could prove crucial in a couple of weeks time.
Corners also look a good market with City averaging 6 corners per game in their 4 home Champions League games and Dortmund averaging 5 corners per game in their 4 away Champions League games.
Bookings is the risky angle as Dortmund were given no cards in 5 of their 6 group games and City have been given no cards or just 1 card in 5 of their 8 Champions League games this season. Dortmund did see 5 cards in their last 16 game against Sevilla but 3 of those came in the 2nd leg where there were 9 yellow cards in total for both teams. Plus with this being the first leg of the tie we feel both sides will have that in mind and players may not want to do anything too rash as a red card for either side could see them go into the 2nd leg with a mountain to climb and players won’t want to pick up cheap bookings which could rule them out of the 2nd leg. There is a good chance both teams will pick up at least 1 card just we don’t feel bookings is an angle you want to push too much with this being the first leg of a tie between 2 sides who don’t exactly rack up consistent high numbers of booking points.
We feel goals and corners are the best markets to stick to with both teams to score, over 2.5 goals, 3/4+ corners each team and 9/10+ match corners all looking good bets.
